MotorTrack: from a personal need to a vehicle's digital history

A very concrete need

MotorTrack traces back to a personal need of its founder, who also founded DYWEB Solutions. As the owner of several vehicles, gradually taking on a growing share of their maintenance and repairs himself, he wanted a clear record of what had been done on each of them.

A first solution covered part of the need, but retrieving and actually using the recorded information stayed too limited. That limitation reinforced an idea that was already taking shape: a tool built around the vehicles being tracked, their maintenance, and the history one wants to keep — without being locked into it.

That experience is where MotorTrack's idea came from. First an answer to a personal need, MotorTrack has since become a product carried by DYWEB Solutions and shaped by collective work.

Starting simple

The first version wasn't ambitious. It did one thing: record an event — a date, a mileage, a short description — and let you find it again later. But that was already enough to make the tool immediately useful.

This tool was already a real, actively used one — not a throwaway prototype. MotorTrack has evolved a lot since, but its founding principle was already there: gradually keeping and structuring a vehicle's history.

Real use shapes MotorTrack

MotorTrack wasn't designed all at once. It gets built gradually, through real use: a generic event was enough at first, then certain needs — a defect to track over time, an upcoming maintenance deadline, a fuel fill-up — deserved to be treated as concepts in their own right rather than free text.

Any new use can still surface a need nobody anticipated at the start. The product keeps evolving this way today.

MotorTrack today

In short, MotorTrack today lets you track a vehicle's mileage and history, manage its maintenance, track associated costs, and view upcoming maintenance deadlines — whether it's a combustion, hybrid or electric vehicle.

What MotorTrack teaches us

MotorTrack's experience shows that a product can start from a very simple need and gradually gain structure as it is actually used.

MotorTrack keeps being built through real use and the needs that emerge from it. This first article tells its starting point and its approach. Others will come back in more detail on the choices shaping the product, its evolution, and the questions met along the way.
